Due to the current corona situation, the opening of the BIOTOPIA Lab to the public is postponed.

BIOTOPIA activities for at home

However, you can still experience the Lab from now on: The BIOTOPIA team is working on digital and analog formats, experiments and DIY concepts with great commitment to bring you hands-on science to your home until the opening. "BIOTOPIA Lab @ Home" wants to arouse interest in scientific contexts and give you a small foretaste of the activities in the BIOTOPIA Lab - from the bottle garden or your own mushroom cultivation for home-use to the isolation of DNA from vegetables and fruits. We also plan to take a look behind the scenes of the lab with the lab experts, which hopefully will make you look forward to your visit in the near future!

We always pay attention to compliance with the applicable hygiene regulations. In our hygiene concept (in German) you can find detailed information about regular operations, educational program and events.

Become a BIOTOPIA Lab pioneer! As a prelude to the opening, you can discover the BIOTOPIA Lab for the first time in the autumn holiday week 2020.

Our Lab Pilots are happy to show you the exhibition areas of the BIOTOPIA Lab and invite you to exciting themed-days with great hands-on activities. You can find the program below. Don’t miss the chance to fly as a bird over Bavaria's landscapes with our virtual flight simulator Birdly.

Opening hours:

Exhibition areas:                 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Birdly flight simulator:    1 pm - 4pm (places are limited)

Participation program:    10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

A voluntary advance reservation of max. 5 tickets (always on the hour for one hour) are possible via eventbrite. You can also just drop by - we keep spaces free for the drop-in audience!

In order to comply with the corona protective measures, we are limiting the number of visitors in the BIOTOPIA Lab. Please bring your masks with you and understand if you have to wait a bit at peak times.

Fly like a bird

With our virtual reality flight simulator "Birdly" you can fly over the most beautiful landscapes of Bavaria during the holiday week and become a bird.

Birdly can be tried out between 1 pm and 4pm, depending on availability. If there is a high demand, you may have to wait a little. We invite you to use this time to explore the other areas of the BIOTOPIA Lab!

We look forward to a voluntary donation for the use of Birdly.

The BIOTOPIA Lab is  an interdisciplinary space that builds bridges between life and environmental sciences, art and design and society. We are planning small and larg events at which experts from different scientific, cultural and political backgrounds join the general public to explore, question and redesign our  relationshipwith the living world.

From panel discussions to hackathons to hybrid event formats - the Lab is an open invitation to everyone who is interested in a change of perspective. Creative collisions and cultural “clashes” also find a platform here. We look forward to collaborative event ideas according to the motto: "Do It With Others" (DIWO).

We proudly announce that BIOTOPIA – Naturkundemuseum Bayern is joining the Global Coalition for Biodiversity,  as the first official member from Germany. The Global Coalition calls for strong mobilisation of all national parks, research centers, science and natural history museums, botanic gardens, zoos, aquariums, and beyond to unite forces and make their voices heard about the nature crisis ahead of the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in 2021. After the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, BIOTOPIA also becomes the 2nd Natural History Museum worldwide to join the Coalition.

In June 2020, the Museum Mensch und Natur celebrated its 30th anniversary - unfortunately, due to the Corona Pandemic, however, without a celebration or other public event. Since the museum has become very popular with many visitors over the past 30 years, this anniversary is now being honored with a launch in Google Arts & Culture.

Use the search function to select the Museum Mensch und Natur and get the opportunity to explore selected stories and objects. In addition, you can even visit our museum virtually via various museum views. Take your time to look at some of the most popular objects and maybe you will feel like visiting the museum live again.

A provocative call for the transformation of science museums into "idea colliders" that spark creative collaborations and connections. Gorman focuses on the dialogue between scientists and artists, designers, policymakers, and the public and considers the questions, ideas and experiences of each visitor as an important resource for a new kind of museum experience. The book can be ordered online in English and provides exciting insights into the planned BIOTOPIA – Naturkundemuseum Bayern in Munich and giving forward-looking models of science engagement around the world.

The BIOTOPIA annual review 2019 is now available for download! It includes exciting insights behind the scenes, an interview with Dr. Auguste von Bayern, a review of the EAT festival and much more!
