DAWN CHORUS - Record 2023!

Almost 15,000 recordings for biodiversity

Nature enthusiasts from all over the world - from Bavaria to Brazil - have already uploaded more than 14,800 images since the beginning of the year until the review on 22.6.23. In the main collection period from 1 to 31 May, there were more than 11,200 uploads this year - more than ever before. We say THANK YOU! Because every recording expands the collection database and supports biodiversity research. Press release (in German)

Dawn Chorus is the first Citizen Science and Arts project that invites people worldwide to collect bird songs! Get up early, go to the window or outside and listen to the birds. Record the voices with the free Dawn Chorus app, upload them and share your experience with people around the world.

From 1 to 31 May 2023, the scientific collection period took place. This year's motto is "Stop and Listen. Free your mind."

But recordings are still welcome! Your local recordings will be mapped around the world. You will make an important contribution to a growing scientific data collection on biodiversity research. Become part of a global artistic project! Curious? Have a look at dawn-chorus.org.

Available now: The Dawn Chorus App!

The DAWN CHORUS app is now available for free for iOS and Android
(currently available from Android version 8/iOS version 11 or higher) .

"Dawn Chorus - The App" “ is developed as part of "dive in. Programme for Digital Interactions" of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation) with funding by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM) through the NEUSTART KULTUR programme.

Stop and listen! The Citizen Science und Arts-Project

Dawn Chorus is a project of Naturkundemuseum Bayern/BIOTOPIA Lab and LBV (Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz) with numerous other partners such as Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and was initiated in the first lockdown-related "Silent Spring" 2020 by Naturkundemuseum Bayern in cooperation with Stiftung Kunst und Natur.

Simply pause, listen to the sounds of nature - and record them! That's the motto of Dawn Chorus, the citizen science project that invites people around the world to collect bird songs: for biodiversity research, for art and to draw attention to the wonders of nature and also to its threats.

Every single recording represents a tiny little piece of the puzzle. With your help, we can complete this puzzle together - and document biodiversity through sound in order to be able to research changes. At the same time, the conscious perception of this wonderful spectacle of nature through emotions should sharpen your senses and awaken your creativity.

Let's listen to nature, record it - and give it a voice!

Dawn Chorus for schools & students

BIOTOPIA and the Chair of Didactics of Biology at LMU have designed interactive teaching materials to make participation in the Dawn Chorus project even more exciting for schoolchildren. In this way, children can get to know the local bird population better in a playful way and contribute to a worldwide Citizen Science project with their own recordings. All teaching materials are freely accessible without registration on the website of the project "BISA-Biodiversität im Schulalltag".

Dawn Chorus is a project that invites people to stop and listen, making contact with local biodiversity through the medium of sound. At the same time, it contributes to a global citizen science and art project. Bird song is an important indicator of the health of our ecosystems. We want this project to be an alarm call and sensitize people to protect endangered habitats and make our environment more friendly for birdlife. BIOTOPIA, Bavaria's new museum of environmental and biological sciences in planning, is deeply committed to promoting understanding of ecosystems on which we depend and inspiring us all to take action to protect our planet.

      Videos on the topic

On the 50th anniversary of International Earth Day, BIOTOPIA's founding director Prof. Michael John Gorman interviewed soundscape ecologist Dr. Bernie Krause

They talked aboutthe importance of experiencing biodiversity through the ears, and how tuning into the dawn chorus can alert us to the consequences of climate change, urbanization and deforestation.
