NEW IN THE BOTANICAL GARDEN:

THE BIOTOPIA LAB

About the BIOTOPIA Lab

As an interim platform, the BIOTOPIA Lab offers a taste of BIOTOPIA, its vision and values. It is a dynamic exhibition space, an event platform and an experimental workshop all at the interface of science, art, design and culture. At the same time, the BIOTOPIA Lab offers an insight into the development process of the new museum.

With workshops, raised garden beds, an experimental space, changing mystery objects and special exhibitions as well as interdisciplinary events, it arouses curiosity about the topics of BIOTOPIA and invites people to engage with the current status of project.

BIOTOPIA Lab@Home

BIOTOPIA activities for at home

With an exciting hands-on program, the BIOTOPIA Lab can also be experienced at home. Instructions, experiments and do-it-yourself concepts bring "hands-on science" into your own four walls. BIOTOPIA Lab@Home awakens interest in scientific relationships and provides inspiration for young and old. It gives a taste of the activities in the BIOTOPIA Lab - from bottle gardens or growing your own mushrooms to isolating DNA from vegetables or fruit. Browse the website and find the right experiment for you!

Solve the puzzle: The Mystery Objects

With our mystery objects you can search for clues online. We present you with objects that you probably don't know what they are. Seven clues provide information about the objects - but be careful: Only half of the clues are true! Will you find out what is a lie and what the mysterious objects are?

BIOTOPIA presents treasures from the Bavarian State Natural Science Collections (SNSB) in the form of exciting object stories with the mystery objects in the BIOTOPIA Lab. Each object is described in the solution video by an SNSB scientist.

„In the BIOTOPIA Lab young people get the chance to approach nature and science in an open-minded way. They receive fascinating impulses and can sharpen their senses at the same time. Especially the communication of knowledge about nutrition is very important to me. With the support of the BIOTOPIA Lab we as BayWa Foundation would like to contribute to the fact that numerous children can discover this world of experience and learning. "

„The variety of appearances and functions of fungi is incredibly large throughout the living world in nature as well as in human everyday life. It remains exciting for the future to see how much potential lies dormant in this still largely unexplored realm of organisms."
  • Dr. Nina Möllers, Head of BIOTOPIA Lab

„The BIOTOPIA Lab is a place of experiences, discoveries and learning. Here we offer exciting formats for all ages – for school classes, families and the interested public – and develop new ones in cooperation with the visitors. The Lab also lets us dive into topics that are important to BIOTOPIA in the form of special exhibitions. We are happy to have a physical space where we can already get in contact with future BIOTOPIA visitors."

Dr. Michael Apel, Director of Museum Mensch und Natur

„The BIOTOPIA Lab is the bridge between the Museum Mensch und Natur and the upcoming BIOTOPIA - Naturkundemuseum Bayern. Many of the popular workshop programs, for example on the topic of nutrition, are continued and further developed here, but also new exhibition elements and event formats are tested. Of course, it is not a replacement for the previous museum, but it is an important step on the way to a great new house, which will face the pressing questions of our time."

„Why wander far when good is so near?" This variation of Goethe's famous words applies in a very special way to our grammar school, which is very fortunate to have the BIOTOPIA Lab, a unique extracurricular place of learning, integrated into its lessons. This is all the more true because the LAB offers with workshop character not only represent an optimal supplement to the lessons in the biological-chemical subjects, but also fit perfectly with the scientific focus of interest of our girls' school."
  • Konstantin Landuris, Architecture & Design BIOTOPIA Lab

Konstantin Landuris, Architecture & Design BIOTOPIA Lab

„In close cooperation with the engineers and scientists of Biotopia we were able to realize a trend-setting concept for the Biotopia LAB architecture and exhibition. It was an outstanding task to create a futuristic hub that fascinates and amazes young and old. The changeable floor plan allows a wide range of usage scenarios in its open areas. It was an exciting process to develop a holistic design concept in which architecture and design flow smoothly into the exhibition object. Under futuristic acoustic panels made of grown mushroom mycelium you can find living caterpillars, virtual reality experiences and many mysterious objects from nature and biotechnology."
